The Human Rights and Diversity Committee, in conjunction with The Teamsters History Project, is offering the first in a new series of programs based on multicultural history.
The programs are designed to look at a wide variety of aspects in our shared past, including events in Black, Women’s, Hispanic and LGBT+ histories and their impact on Teamster and labor history.
The programs, in zoom format, will be open to all and approximately 90 minutes in length. We hope they will generate some lively discussion and ideas for programs and events at your locals.

The James R. Hoffa Teamsters Professor of Modern American Labor History
“The Unfinished Revolution – African American Workers and the American Labor Movement since the Civil War.”
The history of the American labor movement is often portrayed as a history of white labor whose track record on matters of racial equality left a lot to be
desired. Racial exclusion was a very real part of that record. But, the labor movement itself was never the property of white workers alone.
From the era of Reconstruction onward, significant numbers of black men and women forged their own traditions of labor activism, turning to unionization as a vehicle to the same goals as white workers – raising wages, shortening the working day, and improving on-the-job conditions.
In important ways, black trade unions were civil rights organizations pursuing the quest for economic justice. This talk will explore the often untold but vitally important history of the black labor tradition from the era of emancipation to the present.

The new COVID stimulus bill which includes relief for multiemployer pension plans has now reached the Senate where the bill is open to debate and various motions. If passed by the Senate, Central States and other multiemployer plans will receive funding to avoid beneﬁt reductions to participants. We expect some Senate Republicans to try to offer amendments or try and remove pension relief from the COVID stimulus bill. It is critically important that our members, unions, and employers call their Senator and tell them that multiemployer pension relief is desperately needed and to vote against any motion that eliminates this important relief for essential workers. Passing the COVID stimulus bill by the Senate would solve the pension crisis facing millions of essential workers and retirees across the country. But … this won’t happen without one final push ….|

Academic scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $10,000 for high school seniors planning to attend a four-year college or university and Training/Vocational program awards of up to $2,000 for use at community colleges and trade schools. (Membership verification for the parent of the applicant will be completed by the IBT (Teamsters), BLET, BMWED and GCC headquarters data.) The children or financial dependents of full-time local union officers or full-time staff of local unions are ineligible.|
